National Fishing and Boating Education Grants Initiative

Physh Ed Grants: Frequently Asked Questions

Curriculum

Is there required program content to be used by grant recipients?
The Future Fisherman Foundation does not require any specific program content for use in PE classes, but does encourage the use of best practices developed by the Recreational Boating and Fishing Foundation. Please visit http://www.rbff.org/page.cfm?pageID=20 for more information.

Must I include both fishing and boating in my PE program?
Although F3 encourages all grant applicants to consider including both fishing and boating in their programs, there is no requirement to do so. Many successful programs have focused solely on fishing or boating. Integration of fishing and boating is encouraged but not required.

What kind of fishing and boating knowledge, skills, and activities can be taught in PE class?
In short, there are countless lessons that can be taught in your PE class. Whether it is basic spin-casting, introductory paddling, advanced fly fishing, or angling specific to a geographic region (e.g. ice fishing in the north, salt water fishing in coastal areas), F3 supports creative programs that foster lifetime skills.

Application Process

Will I receive assistance during the grant application process?
The Future Fisherman Foundation staff is available to help with any questions related to the preparation of a grant application. Additionally, the staff will help connect applicants with their state aquatic educators for further assistance in the preparation of fishing and boating lesson plans. Please visit our Grant Resources page for more information.

Applicant Qualifications

Can teachers outside of physical education (e.g. science teachers) apply for grants?
Currently, only physical education teachers at the K-12 level in public, private and charter schools are eligible for the grants. Although the applicant must be a physical education teacher, the grant program does incorporate other subject areas. However the grant proposal does provide the opportunity for interdisciplinary involvement as the proposed program must integrate at least two other subjects areas.

Can a school that has received a grant in the past reapply for a grant?
No, but it is possible that supplementary grants may be available in the future to help with the continuation of successful programs.

Are after-school programs and school-sanctioned clubs eligible to apply for grant funding?
No, although F3 encourages all after-school fishing and boating programs/school-sanctioned clubs to work in conjunction with the school's PE teachers in an attempt to include their extracurricular programs as supplemental activities to the PE programs.

Can youth groups outside of the school setting apply for grant funding?
No, but as is the case with after-school programs, F3 encourages all community-based youth groups to work in conjunction with local schools to be included as supplemental activities to the PE programs.

Is it possible for multiple schools within the same school district to apply for grants?
Yes. Multiple schools within a school district may receive grants as long as the grant funds that are allotted to each school are recognized as being separate awards.

If a specific teacher has changed schools, can s/he apply for a grant at the new school even if s/he had a grant at his/her previous school?
Yes, as long as the new school has never received a grant from F3 in the past.

Allocation of Funds

What are acceptable ways to spend the grant money?
Eligible budget items include equipment (fishing rods/reels, tackle, canoes, kayaks, etc.), supplementary printed materials (curriculum handbooks, classroom supplies, activity materials, etc.), safety supplies (first-aid kits, personal flotation devices, throw ropes, etc.), student travel to on-water experiences, and fish stocking. Airfare or mileage to the mandatory summer workshop must be included as a budget item.

Grant funds may not be used for salary or benefits, guest speakers, professional guide fees, charter fees, insurance, permits, licenses, access fees, food or beverage, T-shirts, or anti-fishing/boating messages or entities.

Is it necessary for our school to match the funds allocated by the grant?
No, although F3 encourages all participating schools to foster programs that act as the nucleus of a community effort. Ideally, grant winners will incorporate assistance (volunteer or financial) from school officials, students' families, local businesses, and state Department Wildlife and Fisheries officials.
