Fishing Learning Goals/Exit Objectives
Goal: Provide needed skills for a non-angler to become proficient to fish on his/her own.
By the end of the program a participant will be able to:
Biology and Habitat
- be familiar with state fishing regulations
- identify pond, river, and /or stream features that are more likely to yield
- demonstrate proper care of the aquatic environment
- identify basic parts of a fish as related to fish identification
Getting Ready
- know where it is proper and safe to fish within a local community
- know what to take on a fishing trip, such as first aid supplies, safety equipment, and appropriate fishing gear
- identify basic weather conditions that could be dangerous when fishing, such as electrical storms and flash flood areas
- practice the "Buddy" system or explain the importance of communicating plans with an adult
Equipment
- demonstrate adding new line to a reel
- demonstrate proper disposal of used fishing line
- demonstrate proper care and storage of fishing rod, reel, and tackle
- identify items needed in a tackle box, such as pliers, extra line, dippers, etc
Mechanics and Skill
- cast accurately a minimum distance of ___ feet (distance determined by age) using a spinning/spincast reel
- tie ____ knots (number determined by age) to attach hook/lure/terminal tackle to a fishing line
- rig a fishing line with hook, sinker, and bobber
- choose the correct terminal tackle for the fishing situation
- identify different types of terminal tackle (including, lures, soft plastics, etc) and describe their usages
- demonstrate safe angler behavior for yourself and others, including casting, use of sunglasses, hats, PFD use, minimum first aid and protection from weather
After the Catch
- demonstrate proper techniques of .Catch and Release, including safety for angler and fish
- demonstrate proper storage techniques if fish are to be kept
- demonstrate proper cleaning techniques if the fish are for human consumption
